Icelandic Road Trip – On our way to Landmannalaugar

What would be a summer trip to Iceland without a visit of the famous Landmannalaugar !?

We were very excited to head to Landmannalaugar to see all the wonderful famous colours that can be found over there. On our way, we stopped briefly to enjoy a viewpoint of the Þjórsárdalur valley. The clouds had an interesting shape and we could see that the weather was clearing up. It was going to be a good day ! Yes, no more rain ! At least !!!

After being on road 32 for a while, we came across a small road to Hjalparfoss Waterfall. We took the side road to see this beautiful waterfall and it was easily accessible. Hjalparfoss is a double waterfall that joined at its base into a very large plunge pool surrounded by some rugged lava rocks. From the car park, it is an easy descending walking path to the falls.

We followed road 32 past the power station and direction North, until we got to road number F26, the entrance to the Highlands …. we were already blown away by the landscape that was so different from what we have seen so far.

This post is just a teaser, I will show you the colourful mountains of Landmannalaugar in my next post :-)

  2. Fine, to see you were standing there in no rain and in a T-Shirt. I’m looking forward to your post about the colourful Landmannalaugar. We wasn’t there. So it’s on my to-do-list, you know?! ;)
In 2012 we had to decide to go either to Landmannalaugar or to Vestmannaeyjar. We choose Vestmannaeyjar. We had only a 2×4 vehicle. And we didn’t wanted sit in a bus most hours of the day to go there and back. :)

    • It was good for a change ! I was glad to have a such fantastic weather for this little taste of the highlands. A 2×4 vehicle wouldn’t have been an option, don’t have any regret. This part is well paved, but the closer you get to landmannalaugar the more difficult it is to drive.
